Mũi Vi Rồng sits in Tan Phung hamlet, Gia Lai province. The limestone cape runs about 800 meters into the sea, with slabs 1–2 meters long stacked in layers, 5–15 cm apart. From afar the sloping stone looks like a dragon coiling into the water, which is where the name Vi Rồng comes from. Vietnam's Geological Institute lists it among 10 notable coastal geological landscapes in the country.
About 200 households in Tan Phung live by the sea. At dawn, fishers paddle round bamboo boats out and bring the catch back to the beach. From the 1st to 3rd of the fourth lunar month, the village holds the Cầu Ngư (Whale Worship) Festival, with a boat procession, rites to Ông Nam Hải, bá trạo chanting and bamboo-boat races. Meals here often feature red snapper grilled over charcoal or one-sun-dried squid from Phù Mỹ.
Home of Vi Rồng takes its name from this local landmark, a small guesthouse right by the Tan Phung shore. It has three ensuite rooms and a kitchen stocked enough to cook your own meal with fish and squid bought at the pier. The best season is March to May, when the sea is calm and rain is light; wake at 5–7 a.m. to catch the light slanting across the dragon-scale rocks.
